On 26th November, 1914, the 2nd Royal Dublin Fusiliers battalion of 10 Brigade, 4th Division moved into the trenches at St Ives, just over the border into Belgium from Armenti res. Their first two days here were quiet but on 28th November, the day on which Thomas Laverack was killed, the battalion suffered casualties from shell fire.
